The Top 10 Twitter facts you don’t know

Social Media is such an important part of our lives... but in many different ways!

twitter facts

Facebook is for keeping in touch and getting news about your friends, instagram is to capture your favourite moments and share them, snapchat is to give a glimpse into your life, YouTube is the home of the best video content… and then there’s Twitter.

Probably the most different of all social media, Twitter serves a very different purpose. It is a place where regular people can become celebrities very easily and where celebrities are very active. You have a limited number of characters to use and so you’ve got to be smart about every tweet. It is probably the most ‘real time’ of all social media with brands and sports based accounts tweeting almost minute-by-minute information when necessary.

Twitter is a wonderful place to expand your horizons and learn about the world from real people! So, here are the top 10 twitter facts that you didn’t know.

1) So many Tweets, so little time:

Don’t feel that too many people are on Twitter? Well, did you know that over 350,000 tweets are sent every minute? This comes up to nearly 500 million tweets a day! Now that is amazing!

2) First!

The first ever tweet was “Just setting up my twttr.” and was sent by Co-founder Jack Dorsey. You can still look it up, it now has over 50,000 retweets!

3) Most followed?

Katy Perry’s is the most followed account on twitter with 67 million followers! Now, that gives you goals, doesn’t it?

4) Who’s that bird?

The little blue bird you see everywhere there is a mention of Twitter, actually has a name. And it’s simply Larry! Yes, Larry Bird. Why so? Well, it’s actually named so by Co-founder Biz Stone after the Boston Celtics baseball star, Larry Bird just because Stone hails from Massachusetts.

5) What’s in a name?

Here’s a weird one from the twitter facts vault! Before Twitter was called ‘Twitter’, it was actually named ‘Friendstalker’. So, instead of tweeting at your peers, you’d be stalking them? Other names were ‘Twitch’ and ‘Jitter’. Glad that changed!

6) Your tweet is history

… if you’re American that is! Why? Because the Library of Congress archives every tweet that an American sends.

7) The Holy Tweet

Scared of eternal damnation? Twitter can help you out! According to the Vatican, if you follow the Pope on Twitter, you can actually reduce the time you spend in purgatory.

8) Twitter changes your life

It really does! From making you a celebrity to… getting you a new home?! That’s right, because Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan President awarded his 3,000,000th twitter follower a new home! That was a 19 year old girl who’s life changed completely.

9) A new addiction?

According to a recent study, Twitter is actually more addictive that alcohol and cigarettes! Have you been bitten by the bird too?

10) Finally, why the 140 characters?

Simple! The initial idea was to make it a mobile phone based SMS service. These kind of messages are restricted to 140 characters. Even though the idea changed, the character number stuck!

better half

5 ways you don’t know you’re annoying your better half

Let's face it, relationships are difficult.

better half

I mean, how can someone tell what their better half is thinking all the time?

You just can’t and so, at times, you end up disappointing your partner and they definitely let you know. These situations are resolved in the end and the two of you become stronger in the process. These situations probably happen every other day and you grow because of them and because of the communication between the two of you.

But this doesn't happen all the time.

At times, you better half ends up keeping things inside, hoping that you will learn. They become colder and colder as you don’t and you either spend each minute in fear of a fight or blissfully ignorant of the storm that’s coming your way.

Well, this post should shed some light on all those things that annoy your partner, without you knowing about it! Once you understand this, you can actually do what said was difficult at the beginning of this blog – read their mind. Or at least look like you’re doing that anyway!

So, here are the top 7 ways you don’t know you’re annoying your better half. Prepare to be surprised!

1) You don’t listen.

This is a big one! Why? Because you think that you do listen. But being able to repeat back whatever was said only works in the movies. In real life though, you need to listen to his/her problems and help them discover a solution. Otherwise just be that shoulder to cry on they need you to be. And never belittle their problems.

2) You phub them.

No matter what the situation, there just isn’t any excuse for staring at a screen while your partner is talking to you. The rage felt during this time will one day spill over in a firestorm of shouting. So… best to avoid that. However, if you must do it, try excusing yourself for a minute to at least show them you care.

3) You’ve forgotten the little things.

Before you get your man/woman, it’s all about the little surprises to woo them. Getting he roses, buying him a game, helping her cook or doing housefly chores with him. Now, it’s just become a cycle of under appreciation with the two of you taking each other for granted. Just.. Don’t! The little things made them happy, that should make you happy!

4) You insult/belittle the people they love.

You’ve joked about their friend circle once, twice, thrice and they haven’t said a word. But they absolutely hate that you’re taking advantage of their silence. Sometimes, you may not be able to understand the relationship your better half has with someone, so don’t belittle it. Be supportive!

5) You take joy in contradicting them.

Let’s not kid ourselves, we all love a good I told you so. But do you really want to do that all the time to the person you love? You could actually be hurting them in ways that just can’t be fixed. Don’t be that person. Instead, learn from each other and grow. THAT is a healthy relationship!

better half

Be the person that your better half deserves. The person you always wanted to be! Most times, it is the things that aren’t said aloud that make the biggest difference.

Now that you know you were annoying or upsetting him/her without even knowing, it’s time to put things right! One little thing at a time!

snapchat story

Snapchat Story: Top 7 facts that you didn’t know

Do you Snapchat?

If the answer is yes, then you’re a part of a crowd that’s 100 million strong! You can add that to your snapchat story, eh?

It’s no question that we’ve been in the Digital Age for quite a while now. Our TVs are being replaced by laptops, laptops with tablets, ever evolving cellphones that seemed so distant even a decade ago, we get our news online and our most defining footprints are now online.

A company tends to check your social media footprint as much as your CV before hiring you. Influential individuals like journalists and politicians have to be extremely vigilant with what goes online. Social media is where first opinions are now formed. We’re about to take a look at one of the most recently popular social media.

While Instagram remains the most widely used visual social media outlet for now, a new app is quickly catching on. This is of course, Snapchat.

snapchat story

Created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown while still at Stanford University, with the core idea always being temporary photos. Even after a less than initial warm response from their, they carried on with their passion project and today the Snapchat story isn’t just a function on the app but also a story of success.

So, with so many features like Messaging, Photo stories, Geofilters, Lens, Snapcodes and Discover, Snapchat has come a long way. Disappearing photos have become the norm, everybody has a snapchat story and videos are easier to share then ever!

It’s the perfect time for the Top 10 Snapchat facts that you didn’t know! Read on…

1. Snapchat was first called Picaboo

And it was initially launched on the Apple App Store in July 2011. A year later, it was rebranded and launched on the Google play store as snapchat.

2. Why disappearing photos?

Founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy said that they first thought of the idea when they witnessed a friend’s distress at sending a bad picture. This gave them the idea of creating a social media platform that is the opposite to what we see, something without the longevity of social media.

It was made, “not for the traditional Kodak moment. It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion—not just what appears to be pretty or perfect.” – Evan Spiegel

3. Snapchat has a mascot

In the development stage and even just before the app was launched, the team put its user experience and functionality much before any marketing efforts whatsoever. With one exception.

Their mascot, ‘Ghostface Chillah’, who you now see on the logo was conceived by Reggie Brown, very early in the development stage. It was named after Ghostface Killah of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.

4. The venture meets a Venture Capitalist

Every big idea needs a bigger break! The Snapchat team got theirs when a Venture Capitalist gave them seed funding of $485,000 in 2012. Why?

One of their partners found out that the three most famous apps in his daughter’s classroom were Instagram, Angry Birds and Snapchat. Since then, Snapchat has raised an amazing $143 million in funds.

5. Snapchat Story

The snapchat story feature was launched in October 2013 and to allow users to create a timeline of events. But this only lasts for 24 hours and gets reset for the next day, so you can always start fresh!

6. Ever heard of Snapchat Kidz?

That’s right, there’s a snapchat app for kids under the age of 13. With it, they could take snaps, draw, colour, caption and save the images locally. But they can’t add friends or send the images to anyone.

7. Some Amazing Numbers

Here are some astonishing numbers:

  • There are around 9000 snaps shared on snapchat every second.
  • 70% of snapchat users are women.
  • The number of snapchat’s daily video views amounts to 10 Billion.
  • There are nearly 60 million monthly visitors to Snapchat Discover.
  • Approximately 71% of Snapchat users are under 34 years old.

Have an entrepreneurial heart? Let it show!

How can you increase the worth of a good idea?

By acting on it at the right time of course!

And there has been no better time that values good entrepreneurial ideas than today. Everywhere you turn, people are making a fortune out of their own initiatives – ideas that they had during the unlikeliest of circumstances that have now gone on to give them a piece of greatness. Now, isn’t that true success? They are able to carve out a living that’s better than they had ever dreamed of and all because of their own efforts.

Are you a part of this entrepreneurial bunch?

If not, then why not? What’s been holding you back? Is it:

  • Fear of failure, so not wanting to leave your job.
  • Still waiting for the right moment.
  • A feeling that your idea isn’t good enough.
  • Not exactly sure how to go about it.
  • You’re happy working in a regular corporate environment.
  • Or simply because you are under confident of your abilities.

If it’s any of these or any feelings similar to these, then well done! You’re already on to the path of success. Why? Because every successful person started with self-doubt in one or the other aspect of their lives. This extended on to their ideas and kept them from their entrepreneurial dreams.

However, they are where they are now because they overcame that, maybe not completely but they took a leap of faith anyway. Once you grow tired of how things are and you want to be more, this choice starts to make a lot more sense.

  1. Take your idea to your closest friend and tell them to not pull any punches with their feed back. In this way, you’ll not only get some unbiased advice but also encouragement if your idea is worth trying out.
  2. Take it to an Angel Investor. We live in the golden age of investors! People are ready to give you the capital you need, if you are passionate enough and your idea is good enough. No harm in trying, right?
  3. Take it to the public, do a survey, a questionnaire, some interviews. In short, do some research! A good idea deserves all your attention and so give it every shot of being successful.
  4. Take it to Social Media. That’s right, we no longer need to reply on influential people to spread our message. We can do it ourselves, if only we use the right words and say the right stuff.
  5. Leave fear behind because you can’t succeed or fail if you don’t try. Yes, it is much easier said than done but remember, nothing feels worse than a beloved road left untravelled. What have you really got to lose? But you have everything to gain.
Awaken the entrepreneurial fire in your belly, the time is truly now!

Top 7 tips for personal hygiene

Lives today have become so hectic that we often end up making compromises with necessities on a daily basis.

personal hygieneCourtesy:

You could be late for work and skip breakfast, have too many assignments so you don’t interact with your family or you could be too tired because of the hectic week and so you cancel plans with your friends. Life will feel like it’s moving in a blur, one moment blending into the next. So, you’ll easily lose sight of the things that are happening around us, day in and day out that affect us in a much deeper way.

In this cycle, we often drop habits that actually keep us healthy and able to live our hectic lives like personal hygiene. This may not show its effects in the short run but will definitely affect you in the near future. And then, you may not even be able to pinpoint what it exactly is that’s affecting you. Instead, you may just spiral further into a cycle of worse habits that take you further away from where you want to be in your life. Or, you could stop and consider your position for a while and make some changes.

personal hygieneCourtesy:

Compared to all the big tasks that you undertake during the day, personal hygiene may seem small, even insignificant. This is the first mistake people usually make, followed by a chain of consequences. It is on us to remember not to take good health for granted. Once you give it the importance it deserves, you’ll start to see how health truly affects every aspect of the day.

You need not take big, drastic steps that take up hours of your day, just the small but significant ones at enough!

Here are the top 7 tips for personal hygiene:

  • Keep your living space clean: Make time and clean up your room/home. Remember, the day begins at home and so does ill health. Here’s an interesting post on that: Messy room, messy headspace.
  • Personal grooming is important: Try not scoffing at important habits like brushing twice a day, cleaning your ears, getting a shave/haircut and using medicinal soap when needed.
  • Watch where you visit: We all like a drink in the pub every now and then but avoid those bars that don’t place some emphasis on cleanliness. You have to use their mugs/glasses after all. The same goes for restaurants.
  • Wear laundered clothes: Sadly the joke of most people wearing socks turned inside-out is truer than you think. But it’s just wrong. Either hire someone or do your own laundry but don’t procrastinate on this.
  • Stay clean at the office: With so many people sharing equipment, whether that’s in the office or the pantry, you have to be extra careful. Ask the office staff to regularly keep the area clean.
  • Cutting your nails: Yes a separate point for this, as it’s extremely important. Do yourself a favour and trim your nails to avoid a plethora of diseases!
  • Sleep well: Get plenty of rest – atleast 8 hours a day – to remain fresh and ensure that your body and immune system stays strong.

Personal hygiene isn’t about becoming a germophobe or a recluse from society, it’s about taking some extra care of yourself so you can keep on living the life that you want. You need not live in fear, rather some precautions that will help you actually live life to the fullest.

When we’re healthy and safe, we often go into a comfort zone where personal hygiene just doesn’t seem very significant. However, once we fall sick (and it probably is bound to happen), all we can usually think about are the things that we should’ve done differently.

The best solution is to not let it get to that stage at all! We hope these tips for personal hygiene helped you improve your lifestyle! Do comment with your views!

Stay healthy!

Top 7 ways to cultivate good reading habits

We all have those friends who are voracious readers and can quote authors like Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald at the drop of a hat. They’re usually full of interesting anecdotes and fascinating stories.

reading habitsCourtesy:

Ofcourse, the first thing you think of when you see them is, “I should read more!” or “I wonder how they can maintain their reading habits so well?”

It’s no secret that most people wish they read more books. It’s also no secret that most people keep wishing and hardly do anything about it. Developing good reading habits is not as difficult as people think. Especially because once you start, you’ll just keep going! It’s a habit that becomes self-sustaining and literature arouses an almost endless search for knowledge in you.

The difficult bit is getting the first few steps out of the way. Then, you can begin your journey! Soon, you’ll be running through books, developing new ideas, feeding your mind and having amazing conversations with your peers!

So, here are the top 7 ways to cultivate good reading habits:

1) Start small:

If you pick up ‘How to kill a Mockingbird’ as your first book, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Instead try starting with interesting short story collections. They’ll get you into the swing of things nice and easy.

2) Carry your book around:

You never know when you might get that extra time to read during your day. Maybe your train could get late or you could have to wait longer than usual for an appointment. Devices like the Kindle make this a very easy task.

3) Never read in a hurry

If you feel that you won’t have time to read but want to do it for the sake of it, don’t. Or if you want to finish a book fast just to get to the end, then stop. Learn to take in every aspect of the book your reading; understand the characters, the surroundings… then turn the page.

4) Think visual

People pick up big novels, flip through a few pages and go, “What? No pictures? I’m not reading this!” The trick is to actually use your imagination and bring the pages to life. Make it YOUR story.

5) Diversify

Sure, it’s good to have a favourite author! But if you stick to just one style of writing you won’t grow as much as you could. The same goes for genres too! Everybody loves mystery but try reading an autobiography every now and then.

6) Write down your thoughts

Do you write a blog? Or even a journal? If not, here’s why you should! How to write to express yourself

If you do, try penning down your thoughts about the chapter you read. Mull it over and see if you can derive any life lessons from them.

7) Discussions. Discussions. Discussions.

Don’t keep your thoughts bottled up. Loved a book? Tell your friend! Despised a plot twist? Rant about it to your colleague! The more you discuss, the greater will be your perspective and the more you will be inspired to read!

Reading habits will come slowly. The beginning will be difficult and you may fail a couple of times. The important thing is to turn the page and read on.
